The ‘new chocolate boy’ of Bollywood who gave quality performances with Jab We Met and Kaminey, silencing all who had shunned him not a long time ago.

Shahid Kapoor was born in Mumbai to actors Pankaj Kapur and Neelima Azeem, who divorced when he was three years old. His father married the actress Supriya Pathak. He has a brother Ruhan and sister Sana as well as a step-brother Ishaan.

Shahid Kapoor was trained in dancing at Shiamak Davar Institute of Performing Arts (SDIPA). He was seen as a background dancer in Taal. Kapoor then went on to do few commercials like Pepsi, and had appeared in a music video Aankhon Me Tera Hi Chehra by the Aryans along with Hrishita Bhatt.

In 2003, Kapoor made his debut as a carefree young man in Ken Ghosh’s moderately successful love story Ishq Vishk opposite Amrita Rao and Shenaz Treasurywala, the film was received well at the box-office.

The following year, Kapoor joined director Ken Ghosh again in the thriller Fida, where he co-starred alongside Kareena Kapoor and Fardeen Khan. Featuring in three more films in 2005, success continued to elude Kapoor. However, his performance in Shikhar was critically acclaimed.

In 2006, Kapoor starred with his then girlfriend Kareena in two films, 36 China Town, and the comedy Chup Chup Ke. Both the films were moderate success despite receiving mixed reviews from critics.

His last release of 2006 was Sooraj Barjatyas’s romantic drama Vivaah, a film depicting the journey of two individuals from engagement to marriage. It was Shahid’s second biggest commercial success.

In 2007, Kapoor appeared in two movies. His first release was Ahmed Khan’s Fool N Final. The film failed at the box-office. His next release, Imtiaz Ali’s romantic comedy Jab We Met opposite Kareena Kapoor, became one of the biggest hits of the year. Ironically, after the film Shahid and Kareena had parted ways.

Kapoor then appeared in 2008 with Kismat Konnection, opposite Vidya Balan. In 2009, Kapoor portrayed the dual role of twins Charlie and Guddu in Kaminey. Later in the year, Kapoor appeared in romantic comedy, Dil Bole Hadippa! opposite Rani Mukerji.

In 2009, Kapoor appeared in Chance Pe Dance, opposite Genelia D’souza. He then starred in Ahmed Khan’s Paathshala followed by Yash Raj Films’ moderately successful Badmaash Company. His last release was a much delayed Milenge Milenge.

In 2011, Kapoor appeared opposite Sonam Kapoor in Mausam (2011), a movie directed and written by his father Pankaj Kapoor. The film received a mixed response from critics, however his performance was generally well received. Critic Taran Adarsh wrote, “Shahid gives his all to this role, submitting himself to his director-father to mould him the way he chooses to. It won’t be erroneous to state that Shahid surpasses all his previous performances, including the one in Kaminey, with this film. The film also marks the coming of age of this actor.

In June 2012, Kapoor appeared in Kunal Kohli‘s Teri Meri Kahaani opposite Priyanka Chopra. Despite the film receiving mixed reviews and a lukewarm response at the box office, Kapoor’s performance was generally well received. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave a positive review to Kapoor’s performance stating, “Not many actors get the opportunity to portray three diverse roles in a single movie. But Shahid carries each of those parts with refinement, besides looking debonair in each character … From playing a musician in Bollywood to a compulsive flirt in Punjab to the unflustered and trendy youngster settled in U.K., Shahid does an exceptional job.

In July 2013, Kapoor and Shahrukh Khan co-hosted the 14th IIFA Awards in Macau. His first film release that year was the Rajkumar Santoshi-directed comedy film Phata Poster Nikla Hero opposite Ileana D’Cruz. The film received mixed reviews from the critics, and proved Kapoor’s third consecutive box office flop. His next release, Prabhu Deva‘s action film R… Rajkumar, opposite Sonakshi Sinha, will be released in November 2013. During its filming, Kapoor narrowly avoided serious burns during a stunt sequence.

Kapoor was born to actor Pankaj Kapur and actor/classical dancer Neelima Azeem on 25 February 1981. Kapoor’s parents divorced when he was 3. He continued living with his mother and maternal grandparents in Press Enclave, Saket in Delhi. He shares a cordial relationship with his father and stepmother Supriya Pathak.

As a child, he studied at Gyan Bharati School in Delhi until the fourth grade, where he shifted to Rajhans Vidyalaya, Mumbai. Kapoor has three half siblings: a sister named Sanah Kapur and brothers named Ishaan Khattar and Ruhaan Kapur; Ishaan acted with him in the movie Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi! (2005). His maternal grandfather was Anwar Azeem, a noted Marxist journalist and author from Bihar. His great great grandfather was the film director, screenwriter, novelist and journalist Khwaja Ahmad Abbas more popularly known as K. A. Abbas. K.A. Abbas in turn was the grandson of Hali, the chief protégé of Urdu poet, Ghalib.

Shahid Kapur may be the most non-controversial around, but his name has been dragged in several controversies of late.

Firstly, Rajkumar Santoshi, an acclaimed director approached Shahid for his new film. However, Shahid refused his offer and did not answer any of the director’s calls, which frustrated the director. Despite these claims, Shahid stated that he has great regard for the director and would never ignore his calls.

Another incident occurred with Priyadarshan on the sets of Chup Chup Ke (2006), when Shahid suggested that one of the scenes should be shot in a different way. According to sources, the director told him to mind his own business.
