Biography:

Often known as Bollywood’s “bad boy,” his knack of walking into trouble has overshadowed people’s perception of him as an actor. He has been featured as the bad guy of the industry several times over. But many-a-common-man claims that this macho hunk has a heart made of pure gold.

Born on December 27, 1965 Salman Khan is the son of the legendary writer Salim Khan, who penned many super-hits in the yesteryears like Sholay (1975), Deewaar (1975), and Don (1978). Salman started his acting carrier in 1988 by doing a supporting role in the movie Biwi Ho To Aisi (1988). The following year he had the leading role in the box office romantic hit Maine Pyar Kiya (1989). From there he became a heart throb of Indian cinema.

Following with other box office hits he showed his terrific performance in Saajan (1991), Andaz Apna Apna (1994), Hum Aapke Hain Koun…! (1994), Karan Arjun (1995), Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). His transformations can be sensitive, vulnerable, funny, aggressive and charming as his role demands.

In 1998 he was arrested by the local police from the shooting location of the film Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United (1999), for killing protected wild animals and spent about a week behind the bars. The actor is facing trial in three cases of killing black bucks and Chinkaras and another of illegal possession of arms. In September 2002, Salman Khan had hit the headlines after he crashed his Land Cruiser near the American Express bakery in Bandra, killing one man and injuring others.

Being known for those roguish behaviors, he tried to balance his troubled life with his career. In 2003, he gave his emotionally charged performance as playing an obsessed lover in Tere Naam (2003) that translated into good reviews and a good run at the box office. He not only managed to revive his career, but also to restore the confidence of his producers and distributors alike.

His work was noticed internationally in the movie Phir Milenge (2004) where he played the role of an AIDS patient. It was well appreciated by the World Health Organization (WHO) for presenting the problems of AIDS patient in today’s world.

In 2007, he launched Being Human – Salman Khan Foundation. This charitable organization aids the underprivileged in areas such as education and health-care.

More recently, he starred in the multiple record breaking box office super-hit Dabangg (2010), Ready (2011),Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012) and Dabangg 2 (2012).

Childhood:

Khan is the eldest son of screenwriter Salim Khan and his first wife Sushila Charak. His paternal grandfather was a Muslim from Afghanistan who immigrated to India and settled in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Charak is a surname of Dogra Rajput clan. Khan belongs to Pathan Muslim family through his father while Khan’s mother is reported to be a Dogra Hindu. His family celebrates Islamic and Hindu festivals such as Maha Shivaratri and Ganesh Chaturthi. In 2010 Khan said that he is “half Muslim and half Hindu”. His stepmother is Helen, a former actress, who has co-starred with him in a few films. He has two brothers, Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan, and two sisters, Alvira and Arpita. Alvira is married to actor/director Atul Agnihotri. Khan finished his schooling at St. Stanislaus High School in Bandra, Mumbai, as did his younger brothers Arbaaz and Sohail. Earlier, he studied at The Scindia School, Gwalior for a few years along with younger brother Arbaaz.

Facts and Fiction:

1988
Boy Next Door
Known to be experimental with his hairdos, Salman Khan kept his long hair look for a number of films during the late 80s and early 90s. After he kissed stardom with his solo debut Maine Pyaar Kiya in 1989, followed by Baaghi, Sanam Bewafa and Pathar Ke Phool, whatsoever style he sported became an instant rage within
no time.

1994
Six Pack Man
His reluctance to wear shirts and his sculpted chest became the in thing not just among fans, but also among his fellow actors in Bollywood. Many got inspired by his physique and his larger-than-life topless posters in girls’ bedrooms and boys’ gyms became a usual sight. He went on to be voted as the 7th most good looking man in the world and the first in India by People Magazine.

2003
Hair He Comes
Salman Khan’s Tere Naam hairstyle became as much of a hit as the film itself. So much so that it made it to the list of top 10
memorable hairstyles in Bollywood according to an entertainment portal.
Back then, almost all salons had a big poster of Salman sporting the hairdo, and a long queue of youngsters asking to get the cut.

2005
Spikey Salman
From the long flicks blocking his sight, Salman went chop chop to spikes. This look, like all his other looks, got him a thumbs up from style critics and was widely followed … and perhaps it was because of this that he sported this look for the longest time – 3 years — keeping it short even as he tried different styles.

2008
Blond Ambition
This time, he shocked every one with his blond-ish brown look. He grew his hair to waves and coloured them brown for his film Veer, and did not mind sporting the same look in real life. The look won maximum attention when the pictures of his spat with SRK ruled the media.

2010
Man with a Moustache

He brought back the mooch style in Bollywood with his portrayal of a cop in the 2010 blockbuster, Dabangg. Though he called veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha as the inspiration behind his moustache, he himself became inspiration for many who sported this look after the film.

2006: In February 2006, Salman was convicted under the Wildlife Act for poaching a Chinkara in Jodhpur during the shooting of film Hum Saath Saath Hain in September 1998.
He was sentenced to one-year imprisonment and was slapped a fine of Rs. 5,000.

2008: Salman and Shah Rukh Khan broke into a heated argument resulting in a physical fight at Salman’s then girlfriend and actor Katrina Kaif’s birthday party at a restaurant in Mumbai. The two have not buried the hatchet yet.

Personal Quotes:

The only person I have hurt is myself.

For me acting comes straight from the heart. In that sense I don’t act at all. I think that to feel the character’s pain I have to be myself. Somewhere audiences see that.

On his childhood problems and his father’s second marriage to Helen: It was very difficult in the beginning, when everybody was talking about it. My mother just couldn’t take it. It hurt her terribly. She used to worry all the time, go in to depression frequently. When she cried, we children used to cry with her.

In life go straight and turn right.

(From a TV-interview) I can get caught in many things but there is one thing I will never get caught in, and that is acting – because I don’t act. On screen I am like I am in real life.

Why should I marry? One marries to have children, but I already have children! My nieces and nephews are my children. I wanted to marry to make babies, but now I have them, so marriage isn’t that important, is it?

I’m not possessive, I’m caring… Once you realize a person doesn’t want that much care, you automatically back off.

[Salman speaking about Rani Mukerji on Big Boss] She [Rani] is one of the best actresses we have in the country… And an amazing dancer… Look at that smile! Love you, Rani.

Sometimes it happens with me that I start laughing and just can’t stop.

She [Rani Mukerji] knows who she is and what she can do. After a long time Bollywood has got an actress like Rani. She is naughty, masti khor and a wonderful friend. She has taken acting as her career and given her 100%. Somehow Rani has acting in her genes.
